Guruvayoor temple

On a multi day motorcycle journey from Bangalore via Tamilnadu to Kerala.

I was blessed to have Darshan of Lord Guruvayoorappan, a form of Vishnu worshipped in Kerala and Tamilnadu. He is the presiding deity of Guruvayoor temple, who is being worshiped as Shri Krishna in His child form (Balagopalan), popularly known as Guruvayur Unnikkannan (Guruvayur baby Krishna).

Guruvayoor temple is also known as ‘Bhoolokavaikunta’ or ‘Paradise on Earth’. Per legend, this temple was constructed almost 5000 years back, at the time of Lord Krishna by celestial architect Vishwakarma himself. It is believed that the deity of Guruvayoorappan represents the purna rupa (full manifestation) of four-armed Vishnu revealed by baby Krishna to His parents, Devaki and Vasudeva, immediately after His advent in Kamsa’s jail. This idol was, therefore, worshipped by the parents of Krishna, and later was worshipped by Krishna, an Avatar of Vishnu Himself. So baby Krishna is worshipped on a Vishnu deity.

Lord Krishna told his cousin Uddhava to secure this Vishnu idol, when the shrine of Dwarka was getting immersed under the sea. Guru Brihaspati and Vayu were given the responsibility to find out a similar new place for a spanking new temple. Eventually, they discovered a new place on the same western coast down south in Kerala. As Guru and Vayu saved the idol, Vishnu is called Guruvayoor here.

There are thousands of miracles which has happened at this temple. Incurable diseases have been cured, childless couple had children, famous singers regained thier lost voices etc making this one of the top 10 temples of india by crowd size.

I waited for almost 2 hours after buying special darshan ticket on a Monday. Imagine the crowd on a Sunday in regular queue. But the place is full of positive energy you hardly feel any stress in the waiting.

This ancient Hindu temple was raided both by Christian Dutch kings and Muslim Tipu Sultan. They looted plundered and also set fire to the temple. Till date, may be that's the reason, non Hindus are not allowed inside the temple. Later hindu kings, common people, restored and rebuilt the temple.
